Turnover £1.9 billion

One of the group of five “magic circle” law firms in the City, Linklaters has — in common with its rivals — had a bumpy 12 months. Full equity partners at the firm saw their average pay increase by £10,000 in 2022, to a still substantial £1.78 million each. It recently announced that it was shedding 30 lawyers from its China operations owing to the continuing economic slowdown in that country.

However, the firm continued to act on some of the international market’s biggest deals, including advising Carrier Global Corporation on the acquisition of Viessmann Climate Solutions for €12 billion — one of the largest transactions in Germany.

It also advised Thermo Fisher on buying the diagnostics firm Binding Site for $2.6 billion, in a deal that involved lawyers from 14 offices. And it advised HSBC on the CA$13.5 billion sale of its banking business in Canada to Royal Bank of Canada.

The global energy transition accounted for seven of the firm’s ten largest energy matters in the past financial year. A standout example of energy transactions included advising National Grid on the sale of a 60 per cent stake in its UK gas transmission and metering business — the largest UK carve-out of 2022.
