How frustrating that history has been so negligent on the matter of Neville Chamberlain’s feet. Were his ankles much admired in London society or were they a bit puffy? Was Anthony Eden a martyr to athlete’s foot?

Thankfully, future historians will have no such trouble with David Cameron. Only a year ago the former prime minister was in the thick of the European Union referendum campaign. Now life is so relaxing that he and his wife, Samantha, have marked their 21st wedding anniversary by releasing a picture of their bare feet. For observers of the political chiropody scene, this is an exciting development. What are we to make of the strange gap next to his left big toe? What conclusions can we draw about the unusual smoothness of his shins?

These are questions we must contemplate more fully over the coming weeks. In the meantime, would a fleeting glimpse of John Major’s knees be too much to ask?
