Legal Moves

Jeremy Storey, QC, and Nigel Tozzi, QC, have become the new joint heads of chambers at 4 Pump Court. The pair are taking over from David Friedman, QC, and Christopher Moger, QC, who are standing down after six years in the helm of the commercial, construction and IT chambers, which has more than 50 tenants. Storey, who was called to the Bar in 1974, specialises in IT law. Tozzi, who was called to the Bar in 1980, is a commercial law specialist. Last year he acted for Ferrari in the Formula One hearing over McLaren’s possession of confidential documents. Carolyn McCombe, the chief executive, said: “Having masterminded 4 Pump Court’s success over the last six years, David and Christopher have decided the time is right to step down. We are delighted that Jeremy and Nigel will take us to the next stage in our development.”

John Rhodes, a leading private client lawyer, has joined The Stonehage Group. The appointment follows Rhodes’ retirement from Macfarlanes, the leading London law firm, last year. Rhodes spent 40 years at Macfarlanes, rising through the ranks to become head of private client, a role he held from 2000 to 2005. Last year he received a lifetime achievement award from the Society of Trust and Estates Practitioners (STEP). The Stonehage Group is an international wealth management adviser to high net worth families and has combined assets under administration of £12 billion. Giuseppe Ciucci, the chief executive, said: “We are delighted that John is joining our team. He brings enormous international trust, tax and estate planning experience that will prove invaluable to our clients.”

Michael McKee, the former executive director of the British Banking Association (BBA) has joined DLA Piper’s litigation and regulatory practice as a partner in London. His appointment underlines the growing importance of regulatory law for leading commercial law firms. McKee spent seven years at the BBA and served as executive director from 2003. Before joining the BBA he worked at Citigroup, providing legal advice to its European trading floors. Recently, he has been closely involved in the implementation of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive as a member of the HM Treasury/FSA/Financial Services Industry Steering Committee.

Olswang has hired international arbitration specialist Michelle Sindler as a partner. She is joining Olswang from the Swiss firm Bar & Karrer. Her practice focuses on the pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors and includes advising on joint venture, licensing and construction disputes. Her arrival boosts the number of partners in Olswang’s litigation and arbitration group to 15. Richard Bamforth, an arbitration partner at Olswang, said: “Michelle is a very highly regarded practitioner with truly international experience having worked in Australia, Paris and Switzerland as a partner for the past 17 years.”
