The Jewish Museum in London was founded in 1932 and has one of the world’s finest collections of Jewish ceremonial art. Located on two sites, in Camden and Finchley, the museum amalgamated with the former London Museum of Jewish Life and represents an important educational and cultural resource.
The history gallery traces the story of the Jewish community in Britain from the Norman Conquest to recent times. The ceremonial art gallery aims to illustrate and explain Jewish religious practice with objects such as the 16th-century Italian synagogue ark or the oldest English Hanukah lamp, left.
The museum’s Finchley location houses the social history collections, including an oral history archive with more than 400 tape-recorded memories. Holocaust education is also a major feature of the museum’s work. with exhibitions and education programmes relating to the experience of refugees from Nazism.
