Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom

Microsoft/Xbox 360 (£44.99)

In a role-playing and combat world dominated by behemoths such as Halo 3, this game stands out as an example of how badly things can go wrong. The graphics are nothing new, the storyline is weak. Essentially, you end up slashing and hacking at a stream of evil creatures that attack you in predictable groups. The only neat touch is the synthesis feature, a way of mixing items, such as weapons and trinkets that you pick up on the way, to create special powers and effects. Different combinations have different outcomes, which is a nice touch.

Overall it’s an old-fashioned game that would have looked great in the early 1990s – today it’s just a shelf-filler.
