Ordinarily, “Woman dyes hair” would not be front-page news. But then there is nothing ordinary about Kim Kardashian: everything she does is front-page news. She’s even been on the cover of American Vogue, with her husband, rapper Kanye West – the ultimate sign that the world is at your feet. And so it was that at Paris Fashion Week, Kardashian, 34, chose to debut her new platinum hairdo to her 27.6 million Instagram followers with the words, “So I went platinum.”

“I’ve always had this image of Madonna with platinum hair in my ‘References’ folder on my computer,” she told an American magazine, “and I’ve been waiting a long time to try the look. I thought, what better time than right now, for Paris Fashion Week?”

What better time indeed? Dressed in ever more skintight clothes, accessorised with her husband, Kardashian and her tousled blonde tresses ensured no one else on the front row got a look-in.

Everything in the reality TV star’s life is scripted, and happens for a reason, so it was no coincidence that she launched her new hair at the Balmain show: she has a mutually beneficial “relationship” with the brand. She’s appeared in its ads and stars, with her husband, in its new spring/summer 2015 menswear campaign. She also counts the label’s young designer, Olivier Rousteing, as one of her friends.

She wore a Balmain cage dress hot off the catwalk with a gigantic fur coat, and a spectacular black bodysuit with corseting up the front, the better to showcase her celebrated 34E cleavage. True, some argued she looked a little like an alien with her olive skin and white-blonde hair, but then everything about Kardashian is designed to be attention-grabbing and larger than life, from her cleavage to her bum and her engagement ring, all crammed onto a tiny 5ft 2in frame.

In the middle of all the Fashion Week brouhaha, Kardashian posted another picture of her new hair on Instagram with the hashtag #BlondeAmbition. It might have been a reference to Madonna’s 1990 tour. More likely, it was autobiographical. Perhaps, by next week, it will be inaccurate, because she’s dyed it red.
