Kennedys reported record revenues of £313 million for the latest financial year, an 11 per cent increase on the previous financial year.
Continuing its expansion, the firm opened an office in Newcastle, added a professional liability team in Leeds and made 80 senior promotions across the business. Its global partner headcount hit a milestone with the appointment of 20 partners (9 men and 11 women), taking the worldwide total to 316.
Recent work includes successfully representing the manufacturers of metal-on-metal hip replacements in a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court. John Hastings, who had a total hip replacement in 2009, claimed that the product used in the operation was defective. The hip replacement had been withdrawn from the market, but a judge in the Outer House of Scotland’s Court of Session found that this was based on commercial considerations and was not evidence of a defect.
Hastings lost the case and went to the Supreme Court, which refused his appeal. The court recognised the importance of balancing a high level of consumer protection against a robust assessment of the standards that the public can realistically expect product manufacturers to achieve.
