John Eliot Gardiner

Bach Cantatas Vol 19

SDG

Resistance is useless with these (mostly) Epiphany cantatas, taken from Bach Cantata Pilgrimage concerts in Greenwich and Romsey Abbey in January 2000. Gerald Finley’s bass arias touch emotions usually not found in the voice’s lower depths, and Joanne Lunn’s bright soprano is a pleasure. Everywhere is vigour and freshness. But the chief glory is Bach’s music; the most striking cantata is No 81, remarkable for its dramatic power.
