THE LOWDOWN

Why did Jennifer Lopez go out wearing grubby jeans?

Either it’s the start of a trend for tacky trews or she just forgot to tell the maid

Can I just check something?
Fire away.

How often should one wash one’s jeans?
A compelling question. Officially: barely ever. I think every three to ten wears is the general rule, though admittedly I can’t remember the last time mine were cleaned. In fact, I just noticed an unidentifiable stain on each leg. Hmmm. Wonder how long they have been there?

I could ask the same question of JLo. She was out in New York over the weekend in a pair of blue baggy jeans that were covered in what looked like mud and dust. Surely you’d wash visibly dirty jeans, if they were, you know, for smart?
Well, she’s a very busy gal.

Too busy to empty her laundry basket by the looks of it (or get someone else to).
Ah. I think I know what is going on here — JLo wants her jeans to look grubby.

I see. And have we checked on her recently? Is she … OK?
Yes. More than that, my friend, she’s trendy.

You’ve lost me.
It’s a fashion thing. The pair she is wearing are the height of cool. They are from Acne Studios and cost about $620 if I am not mistaken — and when it comes to these things, I rarely am.

So, to clarify, people are paying hundreds of pounds for mucky clothes?
Goodness, no.

Phew.
Just jeans. It is very specific.

Ugh. So dirty is the new distressed?
Exactly! Instead of complaints about buying clothes with holes in them, now a generation of fashionistas will have to listen to their elders joking about putting a wash on.

But still. Wearing dirty jeans and carrying a Chanel handbag, you accept this is ridiculous, right?
It’s not a look I’ll be rocking myself — on purpose, anyway.
