Jay Simpson, the former Arsenal forward, made crucial contributions at both ends of the pitch as Leyton Orient retained their 100 per cent record with a 2-0 home win over Bristol Rovers.

Simpson scored their second goal — his fourth of the season — but Ian Hendon, the manager, was also pleased by other aspects of his performance. Hendon said: “He also made some crucial tackles. It looked like he ended up playing right back for a spell in the second half.”

Plymouth Argyle moved into second place, Graham Carey scoring the only goal in their 1-0 win away to Newport County.

Wycombe Wanderers, beaten in the play-off final last season, are third after drawing 0-0 away to Crawley Town, who are level on points with Portsmouth, whose 2-1 win away to Luton Town was clinched by a late goal from Matt Tubbs.

Tubbs, a substitute, said: “My game is not about stepovers but preying on weaknesses.”
