Mr. A-Z
(Atlantic)
Imagine the 1970s blue-eyed soul of Hall and Oates crossed with Rufus Wainwright’s lush touch and packaged with the crunch of contemporary R&B. The Virginian singer-songwriter Jason Mraz’s second album isn’t just a huge leap on from his 2004 debut, it’s also bursting with more bristling hooks, dazzling melody and musical chops than any record has a right to. Mraz is also a smart lyricist (in the Elvis Costello vein), but as Wordplay puts it: “I try to keep a jumble/ And the lyrics never mumble/ When the music’s makin’ people tongue-tied.”
With such treats as the insanely effervescent Geek in the Pink and the silken Mr Curiosity, Mraz has got all the necessary ammunition to back up his claim.
