January 16: League One round up

BOURNEMOUTH (2) 2 ROTHERHAM UNITED (0) 0

Bournemouth manager Sean O’Driscoll: We could have scored more than two and I thought Rotherham ran out of ideas so that we were comfortable winners in the end. We have lost our entire midfield from last season, but we adapted well and it says something about this club that they have all gone to Championship clubs.

Rotherham manager Alan Knill: We were on the back foot from the start and giving away two early goals does not leave you with much chance of getting them back. We were second best all the way through.

Blinder: Shaun Cooper.

Stinker: Steve Fletcher.

BRADFORD CITY (0) 1 SWANSEA CITY (1) 1

Bradford captain David Wetherall: A draw was a fair result. Swansea are a good team and caused us problems. They have a great chance of automatic promotion. Their two strikers, Leon Knight and Adebayo Akinfenwa, are a handful but I didn’t think we handled them too badly.

Swansea manager Kenny Jackett: If goals were awarded for keeping the ball that would be fine. We dominated for long spells, but we didn’t turn our domination into chances. For instance, we had 14 corners but we didn’t look like scoring.

Blinder: Steve Claridge.

Stinker: Bobby Petta.

BRISTOL CITY (0) 1 SCUNTHORPE UNITED (1) 1

Bristol City striker Bas Savage: The supporters have been great to me. It was a sweet moment when my header hit the net. City have offered me a deal until the end of the season and I hope to sign a contract in the next few days. Then I’ll be doing my utmost to ensure it is extended.

Scunthorpe manager Brian Laws: There may have been an element of luck about the goal but we had told the lads that City’s goalkeeper (Adriano Basso) tended to take a few chances. Andy Keogh was outstanding and there was some great movement to our play.

Blinder: Louis Carey.

Stinker: Cleveland Taylor.

DONCASTER ROVERS (1) 1 CHESTERFIELD (0) 1

Doncaster manager Dave Penney: Things are not going our way and it’s not the first match where we’ve not been able to build after opening the scoring. But we can’t afford to become anxious. We just need to get back to winning ways as quickly as we can.

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland: It was a typical game of two halves and I thought it was a fair result all round because it was a very entertaining match. Overall I was very pleased because we played with a lot of spirit and character as well as working hard for each other.

Blinder: Paul Heffernan.

Stinker: Phil Picken.

GILLINGHAM (1) 3 SWINDON TOWN (0) 0

Gillingham manager Ronnie Jepson: It’s a very important three points. They were a big, physical side but we matched them all the way. We raised our tempo in the second half and fully deserved the win.

Swindon manager Iffy Onuora: I’m very disappointed. I think you’d know what it was on a scale of one to ten. We have been doing well recently and have been playing some good stuff while also showing the right commitment — but none of that was there. We haven’t tasted defeat for a while and it’s not nice.

Blinder: Michael Flynn.

Stinker: Rhys Evans.

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (0) 0 TRANMERE ROVERS (0) 0

Hartlepool manager Martin Scott: We needed to be a bit more composed in front of goal, but otherwise there are no complaints. I would have been happier if the fans had congratulated the players for their efforts at the end rather than having a go at me, but that’s life.

Tranmere manager Brian Little: It was always going to be a tough game for both sides. Last season’s play-off disappointment was always at the back of our minds and it’s good to get some consolation like this. It’s pleasing to extend our unbeaten run to seven games.

Blinder: Michael Jackson.

Stinker: Jon Daly.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN (1) 2 BLACKPOOL (0) 0

Huddersfield manager Peter Jackson: It is nice to get our promotion push back on track and I was pleased with the energy levels that our players showed after the game against Chelsea. Our goalkeeper Paul Rachubka had very little to do. I do not think we were in any serious danger.

Blackpool manager Simon Grayson: It was one of the worst performances I have ever seen from a referee. Peter Jackson told me at the end that the referee had given them at least three throw-ins that should have been ours and that underlines how bad he was.

Blinder: Nathan Clarke.

Stinker: Pawel Abbott.

MILTON KEYNES DONS (0) 1 YEOVIL TOWN (1) 1

MK Dons manager Danny Wilson: The fact is, Wolves were given the opportunity to speak to him (Izale McLeod) 2½ weeks ago. They still haven’t spoken to him and he is getting a bit fed up with it. He’s come in for a lot of unfair criticism, people presuming that he’s asked for a transfer, but it isn’t true.

Yeovil manager Steve Thompson: I thought we did enough to win the game — we just about edged it. I was delighted with the performance. We were the better team in the first half but credit to them. I’m a bit frustrated but we’d have taken a point beforehand.

Blinder: David Poole.

Stinker: Paul Mitchell.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST (1) 3 OLDHAM ATHLETIC (0) 0

Nottingham Forest manager Gary Megson: Grant (Holt) had a terrific debut and has now set himself a standard that we will be looking for more often than not. He’s got mobility, pulls defenders out of position and creates a lot more space for others. We showed that we can be hard to beat.

Oldham manager Ronnie Moore: There was nothing positive to come out of the game for us. It was unacceptable. We keep giving everybody hope and then shoot ourselves in the foot. We’ve worked hard to get into this situation and we don’t want to throw it away.

Blinder: Grant Holt.

Stinker: Christopher Killen.

PORT VALE (2) 3 BARNSLEY (0) 2

Port Vale manager Martin Foyle: Doing well in the FA Cup would be of little use if we got dragged into another relegation fight. We need to climb this league and getting points on the board at home is vital. Even at two goals up I didn’t think the points were in the bag.

Barnsley manager Andy Ritchie: We were naive defensively for the first goal and you can’t afford to give teams a two-goal start. But I was pleased with the way the boys fought back and after we equalised I thought there was only going to be one winner. We can’t put two halves together.

Blinder: Danny Sonner.

Stinker: Michael Cummins.

WALSALL (0) 0 COLCHESTER UNITED (0) 2

Walsall manager Paul Merson: I’m disappointed but not disheartened because we played better than in some matches we have won. We were playing a good side, but they didn’t cause us any problems in the first half. Colchester have been flying, but we made them look pretty average.

Colchester manager Phil Parkinson: Credit to Walsall, they were bright in the first half and you always felt that with their two wide men something was going to happen. It was not a great performance by us, but a classic away performance.

Blinder: Anthony Gerrard.

Stinker: James Constable.
