“The 37-year-old woman was released from police in absentia and will be subject to no further action by police.”

Mr Hewitt, a former Cavalry officer, had been with Miss Bell at the Cactus Blue restaurant and bar near his home. He spent the night at a London police station in London after his arrest.

He became infamous as the man who romanced Diana and later told all. Five years ago, he published a book about his romantic liaison with the late princess, and about his experiences fighting in the Gulf War of 1991.

Last December, he was attacked in the media when he said he would sell love letters she had written to him during their five-year affair in the 1990s.
