Jacked

Empire/PS2, Xbox, PC (£19.99)

The finer wines mature with age; others turn to vinegar. Jacked is definitely more Beaujolais Nouveau than Châteauneuf du Pape. The game was first intended to tie in with the bike-racing movie Torque, until the film’s abysmal reception in 2004 caused a change of name and a spell of maturation in cyber barrels. It hasn’t helped.

You enter street races in which you have not only to win first place, but steal other bikes and kill your opponents with a variety of weapons. There are 24 tracks, eight of which are open to twin-player mode. And that’s about it.

What could have been a Grand Theft Auto for bikes has none of GTA’s graphic detail, gameplay or wit. The bikes don’t even handle realistically. All torque and no action, indeed.
