Roger Webb writes: I refer to your recent obituary of Jack Gold (Aug 13), known to other basketball players as Jackie Gold. He played basketball for England as a young man in the early 1950s, indeed he was made captain of the team on several occasions.
We both played at guard and he had a very fast and accurate passing technique which could take you by surprise if you were not awake. He was also quite a joker, never missing an opportunity to embarrass other team members — I well remember his antics at a long weekend at Butlins, which had kindly offered to host international matches between us and other teams from Wales and Scotland. We won both our matches. We were also both members of the Regent Street Polytechnic basketball club winning the London League and the National Championship three years running and during this period played exhibition games at the Empire Pool, Wembley as warm up games to the Harlem Globe Trotters who came regularly to London.
