MARRIAGES AND ENGAGEMENTS

It’s true what they say: opposites attract

Giselle Lee, 26, an account manager in software sales, and Charlie Morris, 28, an accountant, were married on June 21, 2023, at the Wilderness Reserve in Saxmundham, Suffolk

Giselle was 19 and studying geography at the University of Nottingham when she met Charlie, a fellow geography undergraduate. “I told my parents we met in the lecture theatre,” she said, “but actually it was on a night out. I came clean only when we got engaged.”

What attracted Giselle to Charlie, she says, was his gentle manner and sense of responsibility. “He reminded me of my dad, which was nice.” For Charlie it was Giselle’s outgoing personality and ability to get on with people. “Opposites attract,” Giselle says. “Charlie says his weaknesses are my strengths, and I find it works the other way too.”

Their first date was at an independent cinema in Nottingham followed by a walk around the Christmas markets, and they spent the rest of university together. At the beginning of lockdown, and to avoid separation, Charlie moved into Giselle’s parents’ house in Watford, Hertfordshire. “It brought [the relationship] to another level,” she says, “particularly in regards to Charlie integrating with my family.”

By the end of 2020, Giselle and Charlie had bought a house in Didcot, Oxfordshire, and in January 2022 he proposed — in Chinese — on holiday in Koh Samui, Thailand. “I didn’t really understand what he was saying,” Giselle says with a laugh, “even though I am Chinese.”

Two weddings took place last year, the first in June at the Wilderness Reserve in Saxmundham, Suffolk, for 130 guests, and a second in Hong Kong for 150 guests. For the Hong Kong wedding Giselle wore four outfits, including a white wedding dress made by Caroline Castigliano in Knightsbridge. After the first wedding a “mini-moon” was spent in Puglia, Italy; after the second they spent a week in Bali. Although Giselle likes to spend, Charlie keeps a close eye on what goes out of the account. “Which is what I need,” she says. “He makes me think I wear the pants but in reality he does.”
