IT MAY have felt as if summer gave up a while ago but officially the season comes to a close tomorrow, according to the Met Office.
More settled conditions are likely in the coming days, with high pressure moving in from the Atlantic. That will be welcomed after the wet spell over the past week or so, although it is perhaps a shame that the improvement coincides with children going back to school.
Last weekend’s heat and humidity triggered storms, followed by further periods of heavy, thundery rain. This wet weather became more persistent, with only brief respite, into Wednesday.
It will be interesting to see how the summer statistics compare with the average, although provisional figures show it is likely to have been slightly cooler and wetter. Some weather events stand out, such as the unseasonably windy weather on June 1, the record-breaking heat on July 1 and the rain this month.
Today, northern areas should get away with sunshine and showers while the southeast is set for humid, wet weather.

Showers are expected fairly widely tomorrow on what is a bank holiday for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, although they should fade, leaving a fine end to the day.
Cool northerly winds will hold temperatures down, although they will ease as high pressure begins to influence the weather during the week. It should be much drier with some sunshine developing, perhaps with early mist or fog patches. Evenings are closing in now and will also turn quite chilly with the potential for ground frost at night.
