It’s all wrapped up for winter

Julian Dunkerton may expect SuperGroup’s autumn-winter season to be “all about jackets”, but the catwalks report a shift towards varied styles of outerwear

Julian Dunkerton may expect SuperGroup’s autumn-winter season to be “all about jackets”, but the catwalks reported a more sweeping shift towards varied styles of outerwear.

Prada showed block-coloured shearling pelts, and Miu Miu, its sister brand, went for bright translucent macs. Paul Smith presented classically tailored coats and Burberry went rogue with a procession of monogrammed capes. There was also a dramatic surge in the presence of pelage — hair or fur — spotted at Chloé, Alexander McQueen and Givenchy, among others.

Marks & Spencer says that its key autumn/winter piece — a navy single-breasted cocoon coat — has sold four times more than expected. It was also the bestselling outwear style last month, which is unusual so early in the season because coat sales tend to peak later in the year.
