Island is ‘merely an outcrop’

NEWQUAY The “smallest island in the world” is nothing more than an outcrop, much to the disappointment of Lady Long, wife of the 4th Viscount.

She had applied to Guinness World Records to have Towan Island officially recognised as the world’s smallest. But Guinness researchers found an EU directive that prevents its classification because it has fewer than 50 residents.

“It’s incredible that our status as an island can be swept aside through sheer bureaucracy,” Lady Long said.
