Sir, I have always believed that one of the great advantages of being married to a clergyman was that one never needed to iron shirts (letters, June 12, etc). The clerical collar hid the top, the stock covered the front and the surplice came well over the cuffs.
Over the past 40 years, my reluctance in this ironing department has had a useful knock-on effect, in that both our sons decided, almost as soon as they were old enough to lift the iron, that they could make a better job of their shirts than their inexperienced mother. As a result, I now have two very happy daughters-in-law.
Yours sincerely,
