Irish Sport Letters

Declan O’Shea, Salthill, Galway

What point was Eamonn McEldowney (letters, last week) trying to make regarding the apparent lack of credentials of the newly appointed Irish soccer manager and his predecessors? I fully expect the only Irishman to have played in three separate World Cup finals to lead Ireland to a fourth World Cup finals appearance. His club and international playing career, both at the highest levels, will stand him in good stead.

It must be asked: how much did Steve Staunton’s 102 caps for Ireland influence his selection as the new manager? Both Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton won more than 100 caps each; both were disasters at management.
