Triggered by a deep gash to the leg that she apparently failed to feel, Esther’s condition is characterised by macabre compulsions and an almost fetishistic fascination with carving into her own flesh. It’s clearly a complex condition and it is something with which one suspects de Van is in some way familiar. It is a work of incredible courage and commitment on her part, but the uncomfortable intimacy and a gore content to rival any horror movie make this an ordeal for the audience.
