Sir, I am approaching my 50th birthday. I was taught metric measurements at school, alongside imperial. Throughout my working life, mainly in the food industry, I used metric measurements, only to have to use imperial measurements when shopping.
How much longer do I, and generations following me, have to wait for the quaint imperial system to be put where it should be: in history books and museums? How much longer do we have to endure the ridiculous system of having some items in imperial measurements, while the vast majority are already sold and packaged in metric?
Many years ago our bread changed from imperial measurements (small loaf = one pound, or 454g; large loaf = two pounds, or 908g) to the 400g or 800g loaves we all know and accept now.
It is my guess that the EU wants to standardise at ½kg (500g) or 1kg (1,000g), which is what we should have had in the first place had our politicians not been afraid of the wrath of shoppers and the fear of retailers at a slightly higher price for a slightly larger loaf.
