The Ian Charleson Awards, supported by The Sunday Times and the National Theatre, celebrate the finest performances by actors under 30 in a classical role (written pre-1918). The awards honour Ian Charleson, the actor who died in 1990 aged 40.

Past winners include Rebecca Hall, Rory Kinnear, David Oyelowo, Cush Jumbo and Tom Hollander. Rilwan Abiola Owokoniran won first prize for his role as Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest last year.

This year’s judges are the actors Emma Fielding and Ashley Zhangazha, Robert Hastie, the artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, and Alastair Coomer, the head of casting at the National Theatre. The winners will be announced in Culture on May 26.
