Hurdlers fail to rise to the occasion

There was disappointment this morning for British duo Rob Newton and Andy Turner as they both failed to make it into tomorrow’s second round of the 110 metres hurdles.

Newton, of Sale Harriers, was clearly unhappy as he finished seventh in his heat in 13.85 seconds and then ran straight off the track at the end of his race.

Turner, whose build-up to Athens was disrupted by an injury he received when finishing third in the European Cup, was last in the following heat in 13.75.

And with the first four from each heat and the eight fastest losers qualifying it was an early exit for both.

Newton refused to comment on his race but Turner revealed that his injury problems had been increased when he tore a leg muscle at the team’s holding camp in Cyprus.

”The first part of the race was okay but then it just went to pieces and I don’t really know what happened, I am a bit annoyed,” said Turner.

”I have had only two or three quality training sessions since getting injured in Cyprus, although the training has been fine.”
