Hugh James has grown from humble beginnings in 1960 to become a leading law firm, offering a full range of services from its offices in Cardiff, London, Plymouth and Southampton. Its clients include individuals, businesses, banks and public sector organisations.
In February, it supported the Welsh government in reaching a settlement with the construction and engineering company Costain in a long-running dispute over its contract to build the £321.1 million A465 Heads of the Valleys road. Details of the settlement are confidential.
Later in the year, the firm’s abuse team represented a young man who had been subjected to sexual abuse and neglect as a toddler. The local authority attempted to overturn its original admission of liability because of what it thought was a change in the law. The judge allowed it to, but Hugh James successfully challenged that decision in the High Court, and the Court of Appeal upheld the ruling.
In September, for the first time in the UK the firm completed a property deal using the qualified electronic signature, which was recently approved by HM Land Registry. The landmark transaction forms part of a national Land Registry pilot to test the new process, which has been described as a “game changer” in signing documents.
