Howie Beck
(Ever)
Canada’s musical stock has never stood higher and the singer-songwriter Howie Beck was one of the artists who set it on its upward trajectory with Hollow back in 2001.
After a long silence this self-titled release returns to his stock-in-trade — subtle, musically articulate expressions of self-doubt and the sort of reflections on relationships that recall fellow countryman Leonard Cohen. Recorded in his Toronto apartment, it’s far removed from lo-fi, even though he plays most of the instruments. Lap steel adds a little rhinestone polish to Zombie Girl and Everybody Sold Out, while a trumpet adds a bossa feel to My Low. Three albums in, he is back where he started, which is no bad thing.
