VERDICT This muffin looks home-made and smells sweet and fruity. Indeed, it’s packed with sweet-tasting blueberries that burst on to the surface of the muffin. It tastes just as good, too. The cake has a moist, gooey texture that melts in the mouth and, thanks to its big size, it’s guaranteed to fill you up despite its reasonably low fibre content. Unfortunately, this muffin alone provides almost a third of the calories needed by most women to keep their weight steady! Best for taste, worst for waistlines — so our advice would be to share. 558 calories

STARBUCKS COFFEE MUFFIN

FAT 5.3g FIBRE 1.1g each PRICE £1.35 each (takeaway)

VERDICT The oats on the surface and its brown colour make this skinny muffin look healthy and give it a home-made feel. It also tastes the “healthiest”. It’s less sweet than the others and has a dense texture that makes it heavy, satisfying and the most filling of the three. But it lacks blueberries and has a strong vanilla flavour that dominates the taste. Its big size makes it a great choice if quantity is more important than quality — and it’s certainly a better option for waistlines than Starbucks classic blueberry muffin, which contains 520 calories and 26.1g fat. 320 calories

WEIGHT WATCHERS MUFFIN

VERDICT: This muffin is pale, considerably smaller than the others and looks highly processed — each one is a perfect shape with no irregularities in size. It also looks more like a cake and tastes like it, too. It’s a bit bland and very sweet, thanks to sugar being the second main ingredient. And it skimps on the blueberries — there were six in the muffin I tested. If you’re counting calories, however, it’s the best choice and provides more fibre than the others, so it should help to fill you even though it’s tiny. 172 calories
