4-4-1-1

Average rating 5.2

6 Heurelho Gomes

Might feel that he should have done better to keep out Adebayor’s early header and also the fourth goal, when he allowed Ronaldo’s shot to beat him at his near post.

5 Vedran Corluka

Did well in his personal duel with Ronaldo to limit the influence of the Portuguese but was responsible for giving away a couple of unnecessary free kicks later in the game.

6 William Gallas

Started well but left Adebayor unmarked to head home the second goal. Twice faced calls for penalties with challenges on Adebayor, for one of which he was lucky not to be punished.

6 Michael Dawson

After a shaky opening, the England defender was brave and determined under an onslaught but, despite playing a captain’s role, was unable to stem the white tide.

6 Benoît Assou-Ekotto

Possibly at fault for the second goal by not coming across to meet a long cross and allowing Adebayor to head home. Struck a left-foot shot wide from long range.

6 Gareth Bale

Limited to a few clear runs all evening. One excellent dribble ended with a shot that struck the side netting. Looked more dangerous after he switched to favoured left wing early on.

6 Jermaine Jenas

A late replacement for Aaron Lennon after the winger went down with flu at the eleventh hour, he was largely anonymous, outplayed and out-thought in midfield.

5 Sandro

The young Brazilian came of age in the round-of-16, second leg against AC Milan, but was overrun here as Madrid passed the ball around Tottenham’s ten men.

5 Luka Modric

Unable to shine on the biggest stage, the diminutive midfield player worked tirelessly but struggled to get into the game, get control of possession or become an attacking influence.

4 Rafael van der Vaart

A frustrating evening on his return to his former club. The Dutchman lost his attacking partner, was booked for kicking the ball away and taken off at half-time.

2 Peter Crouch

The competition’s top goalscorer this season showed sheer stupidity, albeit out of character, as he was sent off for two needless tackles, depriving his team of a focal point.

Substitutes: Jermain Defoe 5 (for Van der Vaart, 46): quiet and, not surprisingly given the circumstances, had little service; Sébastien Bassong (80, for Corluka). Substitutes not used: Carlo Cudicini, Tom Huddlestone, Niko Kranjcar, Roman Pavlyuchenko. Booked: Crouch, Van der Vaart, Defoe. Sent off: Crouch.

Referee: Felix Brych (Germany)
