England (4-1-3-2)

Robert Green 6

Spent last summer scaling Mount Kilimanjaro, so this was a stroll in the park by comparison. Did not have to make any saves, but at least avoided the blunders that have plagued his predecessors.

Glen Johnson 8

Given an unexpected reprieve after a poor performance in Kazakhstan and took full advantage. Generally better attacking than defending, as he demonstrated by playing crucial passes for the first three goals.

John Terry 7

Did not enjoy his best campaign for Chelsea but can look back with satisfaction at the international season, leading the side to a 100 per cent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Joleon Lescott 6

A surprise recall for an eighth cap said more about Matthew Upson’s limitations than his own promise, and he was not seriously tested. A vast improvement on his other, nervy Wembley appearances.

Ashley Cole 6

Overshadowed by Glen Johnson, his former Chelsea team-mate, on the opposite flank, but will not be unhappy to have passed under the radar after being repeatedly booed during recent appearances.

David Beckham 7

Deployed in the so-called quarterback role used in that infamous defeat by Northern Ireland four years ago, but no danger of a repeat as he displayed his magisterial range of passing.

Theo Walcott 7

Perfect opportunity to rebuild his confidence against limited opposition, which he grasped with delight. Brought a good save from ?lvarez early on and created the second goal for Lampard.

Frank Lampard 7

Ended what he feels has been his best season in an appropriate manner by claiming his third international goal in four matches, having recently gone seven games without scoring for England.

Steven Gerrard 6

Looked on enviously as Beckham and Lampard ran the show from the centre of midfield, before eventually joining in. Had a shot saved after cutting in from the left and also fired over the bar.

Wayne Rooney 8

Completely different player from the discontented youth who could not buy a goal in the build-up to the reverse fixture in Barcelona in September last year. Rooney cannot miss at the moment.

Peter Crouch 6

Usually thrives against modest opposition, but did little to overturn Fabio Capello’s opinion that he is not a credible alternative to Emile Heskey. Headed his best chance, a good one, over the bar.
