Sir, Whatever the origins of Section 160 of the Public Health Act 1875 dealing with house name and number signs, Mr Charles Holcombe (letter, June 18) may be grateful for its existence should he ever be required to summon the emergency services or a bleary-eyed GP in the early hours.
My experience as a general practitioner suggests that valuable time is frequently lost trying to locate house numbers or names which are illegible or obscured by vegetation or not replaced.
