Honours even so far in stop start encounter

These two counties have not had much luck with the weather when they have met at Colwyn Bay. In 2004, at Glamorgan’s North Wales retreat, only 51 overs were possible during the four days.

And eight years on the weather intervened again. Only 34 overs were bowled with rain ruining both the afternoon and evening sessions. That, after honours were just about even either side of lunch.

Mitchell Starc, the Australian left-arm seamer playing only his second championship game for Yorkshire, accounted for both Glamorgan’s left-handed openers in the space of three overs before Azeem Rafiq, the off spinner, took a sharp return catch to remove Marcus North, who until yesterday had enjoyed a relatively successful start to his time at Glamorgan.

Will Bragg feathered one behind and three overs later Gareth Rees was given out leg-before but it was a slow death as Paul Baldwin, the umpire, took a good five seconds to make his decision.

Only one over was possible after lunch, bowled by Starc before the first showers of the day forced the players from the field. That over went for 18 runs with Stewart Walters plundering 18 from it including a six on to the pavilion roof at mid-wicket.

The rain eased off after an early tea was taken. The umpires were going to restart but more persistent and heavy showers forced them to abandon play for the day at 5.15.
