Your household dilemmas solved

Q. When I put dark-coloured clothes in my washing machine they often come out covered in white spots. How can I stop this?

A. The laundry powder may not be dissolving completely, which often happens in low-temperature washes. Don’t use too much detergent.

If the clothes cannot be washed at a higher temperature, use a liquid detergent. Don’t overload the machine: if there is not enough room for the clothes to circulate, the dirt might not be rinsed out. Don’t mix washes; for example, never wash towels, which produce a lot of lint, with clothes made of corduroy or velvet, as they will pick up the lint like a magnet.
