Thousands of Sherlock fans will be able to watch what could be the last episode of the BBC drama at more than 300 cinemas this evening.

As well as being broadcast on BBC1, the 90-minute long programme entitled The Final Problem will be screened at 9pm at cinemas. Although cinema audiences will have to pay to see the final episode in the fourth series of Sherlock, they will get some extra footage. Last night the final episode was leaked online and producers appealed to fans not to reveal the ending.

It is widely expected to be the last Sherlock after the drama debuted in 2010 with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The first two episodes of the current series had mixed reviews. Viewing figures for last Sunday’s programme were just above 6m, the lowest for any single episode.

A preview screening held on Thursday in London for journalists and television critics did not show the final four minutes of the drama. Those at the screening described the experience as “being taken to a very dark and distressing place”.
