Hole that helped build House of Commons for sale

Aberdeen Europe’s largest man-made hole has gone on sale for £30,000. Rubislaw Quarry in Aberdeen, above, is 142m deep and 120m wide (466ft by 394ft) and covers just over 2 hectares (5 acres).

Robert Fraser, a director at the Aberdeen Solicitors Property Centre, said: “Whoever buys it would have to spend a lot of money to develop it. They would probably have to fill it in, which could cost millions.”

Rubislaw Quarry opened in 1740. Its granite built Waterloo Bridge in London, the terraces of the Houses of Parliament, New York Opera House and the Forth Rail Bridge.
