Sir, Michael Hayes (letter, June 25) suggests that “there is no other ball sport in which the main objective of putting the ball in play is, in fact, to prevent play from actually starting”.

Baseball, rounders, table tennis, squash, cricket and volleyball immediately spring to mind.
