His & Hers

Engaging documentary in which 70 Irish women talk about their menfolk is infused by warmth and affection

The documentary film-maker Ken Wardrop interviewed 70 women from Ireland’s rural midlands about the men in their lives for His & Hers. Little girls smothered in pink and glitter muse about their daddies; teenagers scour mystery text messages from boys with a panicky excitement; bickering newlyweds discuss who gets custody of the TV remote control; mothers swell with pride as they talk about their sons. It’s a very simple idea and you’re unlikely to come away with a radical new insight into human relations. That said, the warmth and affection with which Wardrop approaches his subjects — his mother is one of them — is unmistakeable, and the result is a very engaging little film.
