Sir, Congratulations to Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Exeter, for designing a hip implant (report, June 17) which has achieved considerable success.
In 1937-38 Robert Milne, the orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, mended (though did not, of course, replace) my unstable, painful left hip joint, which was prone to dislocation. I was ten years old at the time.
I was able to play sports into my forties and fifties, am still active at 78 and owe Mr Milne a deep debt of gratitude.
