The new revelations follow last week’s Sunday Times story about beer bought in bulk costing significantly more than single cans, which caused a widespread outcry.
The investigation organised by Shoppingbill.com, a consumer group, found that the cost per nappy of a Pampers “economy” pack is higher than the smaller packages sold at the country’s main supermarkets, while larger quantities of Dairygold, a dairy spread, are also bad value.
A 454g tub of Dairygold costs €1.92 in Tesco, SuperValu, and Superquinn while a 908g tub is €4.10 or €4.12 in Superquinn. So shoppers who think they are saving money by buying the bigger tub are paying 26c extra than if they bought two small ones.
