In 1964, the great French director Henri-Georges Clouzot (The Wages of Fear, Les diaboliques) began shooting Inferno, which was to be a psychodrama about a jealous middle-aged man (Serge Reggiani) driven to distraction by visions of his young wife (Romy Schneider) with other men. Spilling over with experimental ideas, but somehow lacking his usual efficiency, Clouzot lost control of the project and would probably have struggled to complete it even if he hadn't been forced to quit by a heart attack. Previously hidden away, his footage can now be seen in this documentary by Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea. Intriguing stuff, full of arty shots of a pouting Schneider, it's well worth a look, even though it's presented here with only vague information about its context.
