Hawick fail to match the power of Hawks

NORMAL service was resumed as Glasgow Hawks returned to their winning path, and with Watsonians, their only challengers, failing to pick up a bonus point as they scraped past Currie, the team at the top increased their lead to seven points as they close in on their third consecutive BT Premiership title.

Hawick had travelled to Glasgow with more than their fair share of injury problems, particularly among the forwards, and though the youngsters they drafted in battled gamely, the Borderers were always behind the pace and came away on the wrong side of a 31-15 scoreline.

Across in Edinburgh, meanwhile, Watsonians were riding their luck to grind out an unconvincing 13-12 win at home to Currie. The sides managed a try apiece but Will Campbell kicked Watsonians ahead and they withstood Currie’s late assault. The defeat moved Currie back into the battle at the foot of the table.

Stirling County are effectively relegated after losing an uninspired game at Stewart’s Melville but victory moved the colleges into what is now a five-way fight to avoid joining Stirling in the second division.

Aberdeen GSFP have games in hand over the rest and helped their cause with a 40-19 win over Biggar, another of the relegation-threatened sides.

Boroughmuir joined the group as they threw away a 22-10 lead to lose 34-22 at Melrose. Two of the five will go down, but it is anybody’s guess which two with only seven points covering them all.
