Harry Landis

The seventh of eight children born to Jason and Alice Landis in Miller Township, Marion County, Missouri, Harry Richard Landis grew up on the family farm and enlisted in the US Army in October 1918, just a month before the Armistice.

As it happened he did not have time to complete his basic training before the war ended, and therefore never went overseas, but he is included by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs among those who served in the Great War.

Latterly he had lived in a Florida nursing home where he cared for his 100-year-old wife. His death leaves only one other known US veteran of the 1914-18 war.

Harry Richard Landis, American veteran of the First World War, was born on December 12, 1899. He died on February 4, 2008, aged 108
