Happy chicks

A new Irish chicken brand will land in shops this month. Carton Brothers is hatching and raising chicks on their farm in Cavan for the new Sicín Sásta range. They are using slow-growing birds and giving them plenty of space to grow big and strong. The birds are free to roam, forage and even play on their own outdoor perches and swings. Stockists include Supervalu, where the free-range chicken costs €10.49 for a 500g pack of fillets, and the same for a whole 1.5kg bird. Sicín Sásta will also use a minimal amount of packaging. sicinsasta.ie

Blithe spirits

Festival Spirit has arranged talks, experiences and workshops to celebrate West Waterford’s food culture and heritage. Offerings include a lavish six-course meal kit from some of the county’s top chefs, including Paul Flynn of the Tannery and Ian Doyle of the Cliff House Hotel. It costs €165 for two, including a cocktail. A craft beer tasting session costs €55. There are also free events for adults and children, including a film about foraging hosted by Paul Flynn and Grow It Yourself founder Michael Kelly. The festival runs from April 23 to 25. westwaterfordfestivaloffood.com
