Shostakovich Cello Concerto No 1
EMI
In the Korean-born cellist’s exciting accounts of the Cello Concerto No 1 and Sonata No 1, she is first a soapbox orator hammering out Dmitry’s melodic initials and persuading the LSO, under Antonio Pappano, to share her almost delirious ardour. In the latter she romances eloquently and colours graphically — witness the icy sul ponticello in the spinning scherzo. The only blemish is a slight restraint in the comic grotesque.
