Hall debentures

Seat holders at the Royal Albert Hall should be able to sell their seats, but only receive money up to the face value of the seat

Sir, Your correspondent is right to establish the principle that Albert Hall debenture holders can sell their tickets, for whatever price, if they are unable to attend a concert or event (letter, June 2). We may object, however, if they then claim the tax and other advantages that follow from the practice being conducted under charitable status.

Sir, The solution is simple. Seat holders should be able to sell their seats for whatever price they like, but may only receive money up to the face value of the seat. Any excess should go to the Albert Hall to support the charity that runs it.
