Guy Roux brands Cousin transfer move “stupid”

Guy Roux, the former Lens coach, has branded Rangers and Fulham “stupid” over their handling of Daniel Cousin’s proposed £3 million move to Craven Cottage.

The clubs have asked Fifa to allow Cousin to move to London despite the Gabon international having already played for two clubs this season. Under Fifa rules, a player cannot play for three clubs in a season without receiving special dispensation.

It was believed that Cousin only played once for Lens before his move to Ibrox, a 21-minute substitute appearance in a 1-0 defeat to Bordeaux at the start of August.

However, it emerged that Cousin also played 90 minutes for the French side - managed by Roux at that time - against Ukrainian side Chornomorets in an InterToto Cup tie.

“What a waste of time,” Roux said. “It annoys me that Rangers and Fulham are bothering Fifa with this. They are being stupid and to be honest, I feel they are wasting Fifa’s time. Everyone knows that Daniel played for us and Rangers.

“There is a great invention called the internet which makes it easy to check these things. I’m sure most younger people are more than capable of using it and it states clearly that Daniel played for us - not once, but twice.”

Cousin moved to Rangers for £700,000 last August, scoring nine goals in 26 appearances, but remains hopeful of a move to the Premier League. The world football’s governing body is due to consider the 31-year-old’s case within the next few days. A Fifa spokesman said: “The outcome is pending because the legal department has asked to see more documentation, especially from Fulham. They need more time to analyse everything.”
