Groom shot during reception

SLOUGH A groom who was shot in the groin at his wedding reception was last night recovering from emergency surgery.

Joe Mitchell had just sat down next to his new wife, Marilyn, at the top table when when a masked gunman burst into the hotel restaurant and opened fire.

Mr Mitchell, 19, was taken to hospital for surgery to his genital area and upper legs after being shot in front of 150 guests on Saturday afternoon.

Jagdeep Bala, manager of the Skyways Hotel in Slough, Berkshire, said: “I walked over to the bride’s table where staff were taking some bread rolls and soup. I went to turn my back and then I heard this shot. I jolted around straight away and saw this chubby man with a black mask holding a handgun.”

She added that the police had taken an hour to arrive.
