Sir, Tom Scudamore is certainly right about Denman’s excellence but wrong to claim that he can be compared with Arkle (“Denman’s weighty triumph earns my Gold Cup vote”, Sport, Dec 4). When Arkle won his first Hennessy Gold Cup he carried 12st 7lb. His seven opponents all carried 10st. Arkle started at 6-1 on and won by 15 lengths. The second horse, Freddie, had come second in the Grand National carrying 11st 10lb.

Arkle was undoubtedly the greatest racehorse ever, under either code, and quite incomparable.
