Sir, There can have been no dog grander (letters, Sept 3) than the puppy of Alexander Pope’s spaniel, Bounce, which he sent to Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1736, with the epigram engraved on its collar:

“I am his Highness’ dog at Kew;

Pray tell me sir, whose dog are you?”
