Airbus seeks engineers
Airbus — the European manufacturer of the double-decker A380 airliner and the new A400M military air transporter that completed its maiden flight last month, wants to recruit up to 50 engineering graduates for its British sites at Filton, in Bristol, and Broughton, in North Wales. The two-year, direct-entry graduate scheme begins with a residential course in Toulouse and includes a series of structured placements. Starting salaries are £24,500, with a £2,750 welcome payment. Applications close on Friday, January 29.

Hurry up to check in at Tesco
Time is running out if you’re hoping to land a job at Britain’s largest retailer. Facebook’s high profile
A survey of users of the graduate recruitment website Milkround.com has found that 98 per cent of students and graduates have a profile on Facebook, twice the number who use MySpace. A third of students are on Twitter but only 17 per cent use LinkedIn, the website for professionals to keep in touch with business contacts. In the United States, Facebook has launched a recruitment drive to hire engineering graduates for its fellowship programme and is offering a $30,000 stipend plus up to $10,000 in expenses for PhD students on computer science, electrical engineering or system architecture courses.

Last November’s floods in Cumbria brought the work of the Environment Agency sharply into focus — it is responsible for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales, spending more than £800 million every year on a wide range of flood protection and coastal erosion risk management projects. The agency is recruiting up to 15 graduates and sponsorship students in 2010 and is offering starting salaries of up to £24,000. Training typically lasts three to four years and is supported by the Institute of Civil Engineers or the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management. Applications close on January 31.

Graduating with honours
Higher Education Statistics Agency figures show that a record 62 per cent of graduates achieved a 1st or 2.1 in their final exams in 2009. The proportion of finalists achieving a coveted 1st class degree has doubled in little more than a decade. In 1997, 7 per cent of finalists were awarded the top classification.
